It is said that about 40% of infertility cases in women are caused by blocked fallopian tubes. Fallopian tubes are channels that join the ovaries and the uterus. Eggs from the ovaries go through these channels to reach the uterus. But a blockage in the fallopian tube can cause an obstruction for the egg, not allowing it to reach the uterus.

The ovaries produce ova, also called egg cells. The female reproductive system has two ovaries and two fallopian tubes. Usually each month, an egg from an ovary is released, and it is picked by the fallopian tube. The egg waits for sperm for around 12 to 24 hours in the tube. Then, it moves to the uterus.

If the uterus receives an egg that is not fertilized, the egg is shed out of the body during menstruation. If the egg gets fertilized, it sticks to the endometrium. The uterus has three main linings. The endometrium is the innermost layer of the uterus. During menstruation, the endometrium breaks and bleeds.

Blocked fallopian tube

What is a blocked fallopian tube? A blockage can take place in a fallopian tube due to some reasons. If a fallopian tube has a blockage, it is called a blocked fallopian tube. The following conditions may cause a blockage in the fallopian tube.

• An ectopic pregnancy—the embryo takes place outside the uterus

• Genital tuberculosis—tuberculosis that happens in the reproductive tract

• Tubal ligation removal

• Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

• Endometriosis—the endometrial-like tissues grow outside the endometrium

• Uterine fibroids—non-cancerous growth of tissues that occur in the uterus

• Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs

• Any prior surgery in or around the reproductive organs

• Adhesions of scar tissues

So, these conditions could be responsible for a blockage in the fallopian tube. But, do you know that there are different types of fallopian tube blockages?

What are the different kinds of tubal blockages?

It is said that there are three different types of fallopian tube blockages. These blockages depend on the different parts of the fallopian tube. The fallopian tube blockage types are:

• Distal tubal occlusion: It occurs in the section of the fallopian tube that is close to the ovary. This type of blockage is commonly associated with hydrosalpinx. Hydrosalpinx is a kind of blockage which takes place due to fluid in the tube. The fluid causes a blockage. Chlamydia infection can also affect this part of the tube.

• Mid-segment tubal obstruction: It occurs in the the ampullary. The ampullary is the major channel in the fallopian tube. It could be because of tubal ligation damage. Tubal ligation is done to stop pregnancy permanently.

• Proximal tubal occlusion: This type of tubal blockage includes the isthmus (the part which connects the infundibulum and the ampulla to the uterus. This area of the fallopian tube is around 2 cm long. A blockage can occur in this part due to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), cesarean section or abortion.

Symptoms of blocked fallopian tubes

Unfortunately, blocked fallopian tubes do not include symptoms. They are mostly asymptomatic. But, in the case of hydrosalpinx, the patient may feel pain or heaviness in the lower abdomen; that is because of fluid in it.

Fallopian tube blockage test

Now, you may be wondering how the blockage in the tube is diagnosed. There are tests that are used to diagnose tubal blockage.

• Hysterosalpingogram (HSG). This test is done through a special dye that is sprayed into the uterus through the cervix. And this flow is observed through a series of x-rays. By observing the flow, the doctor tries to know if there is any blockage in the tube.

• Ultrasound. The doctor can get the images of the inside through an ultrasound. A vaginal ultrasound can also be performed. In a vaginal ultrasound, the equipment is inserted into the uterus to get the ultrasound images.

• A sonohysterosalpingography. In this test, saline fluid is sprayed with sterile air into the cavity of the uterus through the vagina. The flow is observed through a vaginal ultrasound.

• Laparoscopy. A laparoscope is inserted into the abdomen through a tiny incision. The doctor with the help of the laparoscope looks inside to find out if there is any blockage in the tubes.

Fallopian tube blockage treatment without surgery
